Graduates and current Riccians, members of the Hong Kong Ricci Heritage Society, as well as Wahyanites Hong Kong and Kowloon celebrated the 90th birthday of Reverend Father Alfred Joseph Deignan, S.J. on March 11, 2017.

Born in 1927, Father Deignan arrived in Hong Kong in August 1953 for missionary work. He served as Warden of Ricci Hall (1970-1978) and President of the Social Service Group, HKUSU (1972-1978). Father Deignan is a well-regarded educationist, who also served as Principal of both Wah Yan College Hong Kong and Wah Yan College Kowloon for decades.

In 2003, Father Deignan received the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa from The University of Hong Kong for his great contributions to local education. A group of Riccians from the 1970s also named a block at Ricci Hall as “Fr. Deignan Block” in recognition of his teaching and leadership.

"During his wardenship, Father Deignan gave a high degree of autonomy to both Riccians and the Ricci Hall Students’ Association, HKUSU as he respected the unique hall culture of Ricci. However, when their behavior showed a lack of judgment, Father would be there with his wise counsels. He is always loved for his liberal mind."

狄恆神父九十大壽慶典

香港大學利瑪竇宿舍文物保育及徵集計劃聯席召集人

一眾香港大學利瑪竇宿舍校友及宿生、香港利瑪竇學會會員、香港華仁書院及九龍華仁書院師生於2017年3月11日晚上為宿舍前舍監狄恆神父慶祝九十大壽。

狄恆神父生於1927年，1953年8月奉耶穌會命來港宣教。神父於1970至1978年擔任利瑪竇宿舍舍監，並於1972至1978年任職香港大學學生會社會服務團會長，作育英才，樹惠良多，更曾職掌九龍及香港華仁書院校長多年。2003年，香港大學向狄恆神父頒授社會科學榮譽博士學位，表揚神父的有教無類，以及多年來的卓越貢獻。2016年，一眾70年代畢業的利瑪竇宿舍宿生籌得善款，將宿舍一棟命名為狄恆神父樓，以紀神父盛德。
