Ricci Hall secured the championship of the Interhall Malayan Alumni Challenge Cup (also known as the Malayan Cup). Winning its 36th title and standing tall among all halls and colleges, the Hall was honoured to have the Malayan Cup presented to it by Professor Andrew Wong (BA 1967) on the Presentation Day organised by the Sports Association, HKUSU on April 20, 2018.

During his undergraduate studies, Professor Wong resided in Ricci Hall and lived a vivid and fruitful university life. He served in the Hong Kong University Students’ Union (HKUSU), the Social Service Group, HKUSU, the Athletics Association, HKUSU (the former body of Sports Association, HKUSU), the Hong Kong University Students’ Union Council, and many others. After studying in the United States, Professor Wong founded the Department of Government and Public Administration at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was also President of the Legislative Council from 1995 to 1997.

Under the leadership of Professor Wong, the then Sports Captain of Ricci Hall Students’ Association, HKUSU, Ricci Hall won the Malayan Cup in 1965. Prizes were subsequently presented to hallmates on the Champion Day by Mr and Mrs Eric Wong Tape, the former being the Founding Chairman of the Hall’s Students’ Association.

Professor Wong has also supported Ricci Hall unfailingly. He performed in “A Lizard is no Dragon”, the Commemorative Cantonese Opera for the 60th anniversary of Ricci Hall in 1989. Professor and Mrs Wong were also actively involved in the remodelling of the Ricci Hall Library, which has rightfully served as the Riccian community’s memory palace for over 85 years.

Half a century after graduation, Professor Wong returned to the old sports ground, which is now the Flora Ho Sports Centre and also the venue of the Presentation Day. Professor Wong shared with the audience the unforgettable experience of joining and winning various sports games. For the first time as the Guest of Honour, Professor Wong congratulated Ricci Hall on its victory, and emphasised duty and the promise of Riccians to exceed one’s limit and thus win.

Following the trophies and flag pennant presentations, Professor Wong presented the Malayan Cup back to the Riccians and joined the celebration with thunderous applause.
