Goodbye, Dr John Ho

John Ho 何庭森(1942-2016)  BSc 1964; BSc(Sp) 1965

Dr John Ho, Distinguished Service Professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016. He was survived by his wife Martha Leung (B.A., 1964). Dr Ho entered HKU in 1961 as a King Edward VII Scholar. He received a B.Sc.(Gen.) in 1964 and a B.Sc. (Special) in 1965.  He earned a PhD in physics from MIT in 1969. His research interests were in  the use of light scattering, magneto-optics, electro-optics, and electron diffraction to study phase transitions and critical phenomena in liquid crystals, biomembranes and microemulsions.

 

He joined the faculty at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo in 1975 and built a distinguished career as an experimental condensed matter physicist, earning him election as a fellow of the American Physical Society, among other honors. He was named one of 43 distinguished alumni of the Faculty of Science of HKU in 2009. From 2006 until 2015, John served as Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School at SUNY Buffalo.
