Searching for the Past - My Mother, the King Edward VII Scholar

Wilfred Tang, son of alumna Tsang Hwa, and his family paid a visit to HKU from the United States to search for the plaque of the King Edward VII Scholars as his mother was an awardee in 1954.

Tsang Hwa was a mathematics student but her studies were interrupted when she migrated to the US as a permanent resident. After leaving HKU in June 1956, she moved to the US with her family in September 1956. She later married Alfred Tang, an engineering graduate of the University who she met during her time in Hong Kong.

They have two children who now have their own loving families. Tsang Hwa and Alfred are extremely proud of all of them. Before Tsang's retirement, she was a mathematician at California State University, East Bay.

"The King Edward VII Scholarships" was a prestigious award established on the founding of the University. The Scholarships were awarded annually to the top matriculating student entering HKU. It was a great honour and names of this scholarship’s awardees were encrypted on the wooden panels outside Loke Yew Hall in Main Building. The scholarships provided an annual allowance of £40 sterling which, was a generous sum in those days.
