A Journey into the World of Magic

Eric performing magic with paper aeroplane

Eric Cheng 鄭耀邦BEng (IMMSE) 2002

Eric is one of the seven magicians representing Hong Kong in The 26th World Championship of Magic ,a.k.a. FISM to compete against 150 other magicians all over the world.

The triennial FISM closed its curtain in early July at Rimini, Italy this year. The competition standard is high as expected and FISM is almost like every magician’s dream stage. “To enter FISM competition, first you need local selection, after that you need to participate relevant continental magic competition, for Hong Kong it is FISM Asia, to prove you are qualified the world championship entry level,” said Eric.

Eric brought along his magical paper planes, hoping to deliver a perfect performance during the competition. Nevertheless, "My result is not that satisfactory, but the experience gained is good enough to polish my magic act for future performance.”

He started learning magic while he was a member in Magic Club HKUSU during Year 1. A year later he started handling the club affairs & eventually became the chairperson. Upon graduation, Eric was invited as guest performer in the club's annual performance for many years. He is now an official member of Magicians' Association of Hong Kong & magic becomes his life long interest.

Currently, Eric is a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer in Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Ltd (HAECO). He is capable of carrying out aircraft certification on types including: Airbus (A320, A330, A340, A380) & Boeing (B737, B747, B777 and even state of the art the Dreamliner B787). He utilized his time outside from his work & family thoroughly in practicing magic though he worked under shift pattern environment. The work with large steel birds inspired him with the use of a key element in his act - paperplanes.  In 2011, he won the 1st prize in Stage Magic Championship of Hong Kong with his magic Act "Airmail" featuring paperplanes. He also appeared in TVB magic programme "The Magic Ring 魔法擂台" with excellent result.

"I'm glad to perform my FISM magic act there finally. I do remember I performed my very first stage magic in HKU Chong Yuet Ming Amenities centre during Year 2. And today I performed my magic on stage of Italy towards 3000 audiences. The next FISM will be held in Busan, Korea in 2018. I hope I can be there three years later."
