Statistics and Actuarial Science celebrating its Golden Jubilee

Mar 11, 2017

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science of the University of Hong Kong is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017.

To mark the Golden Jubilee of the Department, a series of events are being held, including a public lecture by Professor Howell Tong, former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of HKU and alumnus, HKU-NUS-STANFORD Conference in Statistical Science & Decision Analytics, and the Golden Jubilee Banquet, which was held on Saturday, March 11, 2017.

More than 400 guests, alumni, staff and students of the Department reunited at the once-in-a-decade banquet. Games hosted by Dr Philip Yu and the student Statistics and Actuarial Science Society heated up the scene, while a vocal performance by Ms Lucy Kwan brought the house down. The video made by Statistics student Mr Jiaqi Fan, which was screened at the banquet, took all the attendees back through the past 50 years of history and glory of the Department. Although time is never enough for the reunion, the evening was certainly a memorable occasion for everyone at the banquet.

From a special teaching unit to one of the most established Statistics and Actuarial Science departments in the world, the Department has unquestionably come a long way over the past five decades, showing the world its strengths and impact. As the name of this special anniversary "Golden Jubilee" suggests, the Department will continue to shine like a golden sun and blossom with dynamic developments in the years ahead.
